Chapter 16

Perry

I whistled low and deep. “Wow. Just, wow.” The word bore repeating.

Delia always looked good, but this evening was something different. Typically, I saw her in business casual. There was nothing casual about the low-cut black dress Delia wore tonight.

“What’s the occasion?” I asked. “And whoever you’re meeting is one lucky man or woman.” I knew Delia wasn’t married, but beyond that, I didn’t know a lot about her private life.

“Thank you, Perry.” Delia sashayed her hips before sticking a leg out and dramatically posing.

A tantalizing slit ran up the side of her leg and showed off a shapely calf and thigh. Delia’s three-inch heels accentuated the curve of her leg. Sometimes, a woman’s shoes wore her. With Delia, she did the wearing. Delia was a woman born wearing stilettos. I inwardly cringed at the mental image that had brought up. That would have been hell on Delia’s birth mother.

Slinking farther into the break room, Delia reached into the fridge and grabbed a couple of Tupperware bowls, placing them in a larger bag. The terrycloth bag looked out of place against Delia’s fancy attire.

“I’ve got a date tonight.” Delia twirled a hand in the air, her French manicure catching on the low lighting. “It’s more of a work thing, really.”

I blinked. “Work? Really? I didn’t realize you had those kinds of meetings with clients.” My gaze roamed up and down Delia’s body again. Thinking of Delia dressing like that for something work-related made my brain twitch, and not in a pleasant way.

“He’s a big client.” Delia threw me a wink as she lifted the lid on one of her bowls and took a sniff. Her crinkled nose made me think whatever was inside was a few days past edible. “I might just throw the whole bowl out,” Delia said, confirming what I’d thought.

I’d worked at Maverick Insurance for almost a year, and I’d never seen Delia dressed up like this. “Is that common?” I asked.

Delia’s head popped up above another bowl she’d pulled from the fridge. “Is what common?”

I waved a hand in Delia’s direction and answered, “Getting dressed up and . . . going out somewhere a little more . . .” I wasn’t exactly sure where Delia was headed.

Delia’s light laughter filled the room. “Oh, Perry. You have got to be the sweetest thing. You’re worried about me.”

When I started to protest, Delia held up a halting hand. “I can hear it in your voice. Don’t worry. I’m not offended. It’s kind of you to be concerned, but there’s really nothing to worry about. I’m not doing anything I don’t want to do. No one’s pressured me.” Taking a few steps closer, Delia placed a hand on her hip, accentuating her curves. “In fact, it’s something I enjoy—something I excel at. I have no problem using every asset I’ve got.”

“Oh.” I had no idea what else to say and simply shifted my weight, taking some pressure off my left leg. I hadn’t realized I’d been standing on it so long and winced when a twinge of unhappiness echoed through my knee.
